My Love-Hate Relationship with Morning Routines: Can I Really Become a Morning Person?

I have a confession: I’ve always wanted to be one of those people who effortlessly wakes up at 6 a.m., drinks a green smoothie, and starts their day with a sunrise yoga session. You know the type—they seem to have it all together before most of us have even hit snooze for the third time. So, in the spirit of self-improvement, I decided to give this whole “morning routine” thing a shot.

Let me tell you, it hasn’t been easy. The first hurdle? Actually getting out of bed. My bed is basically my best friend, and leaving it in the morning feels like betrayal. But I’ve found a trick that sometimes works: placing my alarm across the room. It forces me to get up, and once I’m out of bed, I’m less likely to crawl back under the covers. (Keyword: less likely.)

Then there’s the whole smoothie situation. I’ve tried blending up kale, spinach, and all those other things that make you feel like a health guru. But let’s be real—most of the time, I end up adding way too much fruit to cover the taste of the greens, and it’s basically just a sugary slush by the end. But hey, it’s still better than skipping breakfast, right?

As for morning exercise… well, let’s just say that stretching counts as yoga in my book. I’ve managed a few downward dogs and maybe a warrior pose or two, but most days, I settle for a brisk walk to the coffee maker. Baby steps, folks.

So, am I a morning person now? Not exactly. But I’ve found that having a routine—even a shaky one—does make my mornings a little less chaotic. And on the rare days when I do manage to stick to my plan, I feel pretty darn accomplished. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll actually look forward to that 6 a.m. wake-up call. Until then, I’ll keep hitting snooze… just once or twice.
